The old wooden lighthouse, relocated from the windy headland at the harbour entrance, now stands on a headland overlooking a perfectly still Akaroa Harbour on New Zealand's Banks Peninsula, south of Christchurch. This delightful village still bears the vestiges of its French heritage in the form of street names, a "gendarmerie", and a service station selling "essence" and offering "reparations".
