Zhu Jia Jiao Houses

Houses on a Zhu Jia Jiao canal. Oil painting by Dai Wynn.

Tourists to Zhu Jia Jiao, the “Venice of Shanghai” in China, enjoy their slow boat ride along one of the many canals. Some of the white-washed buildings are restaurants, some sell handicrafts, but many are lived in as they have been for hundreds of years.

ZhongShan Bridge

A stone bridge in ZhongShan Park spans the tranquil waters of an ornamental lake in the ChangMing district of Shanghai. This scene does not reflect the cacophony of sounds accompanying Tai Chi classes, line dancing, and ballroom dancing which take place daily in open paved areas. Nor is there any indication of the oppressive heat and humidity in the month of September.
